Default Best external drive backup software?

I have a usb external hard drive and am looking for a good backup program. I don't need real-time back-up, a scheduler would be fine. It seems the reviews for every package I look at have issues, including Windows Backup. Any recommendations?

BTW - if you are not backing up your data, start now. Disk recovery services can cost as much as a new computer. Don't ask me how I know

I actually like W7 backup program especially their system image feature which is what I use mostly because I like to quickly restore my system in the event of HD failure and or if I wanted to upgrade the HD.

The only other program I've used is Acronis TrueImage which a lot people seem to like and I did too before W7 backup came along.

I prefer free over having to pay for Acronis as long as it suites my needs.

I agree with Wilson. Win 7's Backup and Restore allows you to create a system image and a 'documents' backup. The interface is easy to use.

If you are looking for something more robust, I also recommend Acronis True Image Home. It's not free, course, but it is one of the best programs of its type.

It's best to set a schedule for your backup for a time when you're not using your machine because a backup will take a while to complete, especially on a USB connection and if you have a lot of data.

I like Praetorian Guard. I back up all my files there automatically and I donít have to worry if I delete something or if my disk crashes. You can set a schedule for your backup daily, weekly, monthly for a certain day etc. Iíve set mine to every Saturday.

Praetorian Guard is a good software that can save your data automatically if power goes off.

You can try backupcow.com, which I think is the best free backup software. It can back up and sync files between computers over local network or Internet/Intranet.
