Athlon 64

I have been reading up on some things and was wondering how big an effect a 64 bit CPU would do for me. I understand that it wont have too big of an effect now but in the future. I want to be able to keep this computer for as long as possible so I'm thinking this might be the way to go. Could you help me with this?

The main improvement is the fact that it does a ton of work per clock cycle, not the fact that it's 64 bits. It's just really fast.
