So what are some of you guy's favorite and most useful software?

Here's some of mine:

Opera (http://www.opera.com)
I just love this browser...the speed, tabbed browsing, skins, and mouse gestures!

OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org)
Completely free, open source, very much like Microsoft Office, and it can even output to PDF!

RealVNC (http://www.realvnc.com/)
Complete control over another computer over a LAN. Perfect for messing with server settings while sitting at your own computer.

Trillian (http://www.ceruleanstudios.com/)
Connect to AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ, and IRC all at the same time! And have multiple connections for each! And it's loaded with options! (I love options)

Winamp 5 (http://www.winamp.com/)
Actually 5.03 is out now, and it's really nice. If you liked Winamp 2, and hated Winamp 3, but loved the skins, then this is the media player for you!

Photoshop CS (http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/main.html)
Sure, you can go ahead and use your GIMP just because it's free, but NOTHING beats this program.

dBPowerAMP (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm)
An extrememly good CD ripping/music file converting program. Has a whole lot of codecs you can DL for it.

Nero (http://www.nero.com/en/index.html)
Man...what a GOOD burning program. :)

Alcohol 120% (http://www.alcohol-software.com/)
Make some EXCELLENT CD ISOs...and you can run them from virtual drives with...

Daemon Tools (http://www.daemon-tools.cc/portal/portal.php)
Run any virtual CD/DVD

Dev-C++ (http://www.bloodshed.net/devcpp.html)
A really good development environment for C++

ObjectDock (http://www.stardock.com/products/objectdock/)
Looks like that Mac quick launch thingy, except for Windows, so it's sweet. You know...the quick launch thingy that bubbles when your mouse is over it. Yeah...it's sweet ;-)

WindowFX (http://www.stardock.com/products/windowfx/)
Give windows and menus alpha transparency, shadows, fading, and other special effects. (I'm a sucker for those)

CursorXP (http://www.stardock.com/products/cursorxp/)
Really nice looking cursors for Windows XP.

And SoftPedia (http://www.softpedia.com) is a sweet site for Freeware and Shareware.

My selection of software is quite small. Mostly standard windows stuff and office. Too paranoid to put freeware on my comp. The budget comp I will buid will be my tester for freeware.

Nero burning rom
Have to agree, takes care of all my cd writing needs. The wave deitor is also handy.

Yeah, I've used the wave editor in nero quite a bit. A very usefull piece of software. You can even remove background buzzing!

Depends what type of software. My most useful software consists of an Operating System (Windows2000, not my preference by any OS will do). Also I need my enternet DSL connection application(SBC Ethernet). Both AIM and IRC (I guess those fit into trillian though). Also I have basically every Windows browser : Firebird*my choice*, now Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera, and I.E. I don't really burn CD's or music, so half your programs don't apply to me.

I wish I had wWord, but the closest I have is WordPad :laugh . Oh well. I also use Photoshop a lot, and HTML-Kit with smartFTP. I guess those don't exactly apply to most people though. Hmm... Maybe some games too, not that I ever have time to actually play them. Seems as thought I buy games, play the, once, and never can play them again.

The two applications I use and treasure the most are:

Calculator
MS Paint

Hey TheMattrix, Thanks for the link to freeware database.

I found this software called BeSweet on the site. It is supposed to be able to take a audio off of a DVD and convert it to a mp3 file. Looks like a nice way to get some themesongs. Has anyone used this software? Here's a link to the BeSweet page: http://dspguru.doom9.net/

Any opinions?

Well, I'll give it a try next time I need to transcode some audio, which might be pretty soon.

Yeah, I'm trying to put this x-files episode on SVCD, but NO programs that I have are able to do it. I think the problem is that it's PAL instead of NTSC. But even if I convert it PAL, the sound (AC3) doesn't convert with it. So that's where this program would come in.

Btw, does anyone know of any programs that convert XviD or DivX to MPEG-2 (SVCD)?

Eww, I dunno.

I was having some real problems trying to convert Windows Media Center files (DVR-MS or something) to Mpeg formats. Windows MCE is pretty stingy about watching TiVo'd files on another computer.

I think 321 studios has software that converts dvd to svcd. Haven't actually tried it. Check their forum and see what other's think of it. I think it's called "dvd copy plus".
