Anyone know when (realistically) MS will be releasing SP2 for XP?

No, but it may be in the next day or two:

Great one more thing to do, along with updating all the drivers to get ready for Doom3.
Of course that has to wait until I clean up the mess that was created when I tried to upgrade from NIS'03 to NIS'04 last night :curse . Apparently there are all kinds of boogers that get left behind after doing an uninstall of NIS. I found a 5-page list of instruction on the Symantec site last night on how to uninstall using a specific removal utility and clear left over temp files, folders and register entrires. Weee we're having fun now. :curse :thumbsdown

You probably already know this, but just in case:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 released to manufacturing today (8/04/04) after an unexpected two-day-long delay due to some unspecified issues. ... The Redmond, Washington software giant will also be refreshing the Windows XP retail package gradually, so by the end of October, consumers will be able to buy a boxed version of Windows XP SP2. In the meantime, turning on Automatic Updates is the best way to upgrade. ... The package will not appear immediately on www.windowsupdate.com. When it does, the site will include an option to order a free CD-ROM with the update. Because delivery may take as long as 6 to 8 weeks, though, Microsoft expects most users to opt for the automated update.

Since there have been reports of compatibility issues with SP2 and some applications, if anyone encounters anything bizarro in that regard, don't post it. Errr, I mean, please post it. ;-)

I'm sure we'll have stuff to report soon! We're applying SP2 to all machines as of tomorrow.

Thanks for the link, Max,
:curse Good Grief :censored
Why would they release an SP that is so incompatible with such and exhaustive list of popular programs?

Looks like as long as you have the newest versions of the programs, you should be fine. Personally, I havn't had any problems with it yet.

Yeah, you're probably right. Unfortunately, almost none of my software is really up-to-date, except for Opera and a few games. I don't plan to download SP2 to my current PC since I'm getting a new one. But maybe I should, just to see how SP2 interacts with the old software. :wig ;-)

I performed a slipstreamed SP2 install on my laptop a few days ago... no problems so far... I did notice RealPlayer wouldn't install (it is on that list, URL posted above), but no real loss there...
