Ok, so my new comp comes in on Thurs :love . And basically i have AOL dsl on my downstairs computer, and i will be connecting my new computer in a room upstairs with no phone line. So i went out and bought Lynkys (sp) Router and a matching Lynksys PCI card.
Was just wondering 1, will this work from downstairs to upstairs.
And 2, is a routed connection going to cause me to have a crappy connection?

yes it should work fine through floors. If your online gaming you're probably not going to like the wireless connection. For everything else you won't notice a difference. Try to hardwire the gaming computer and make the other one wireless.

I am in the same sort of debacle. I want to hardwire the internet to my room which is down the hall from the office and dsl modem. My dad doesn't want any cords to be showing and so tucking under the carpet wouldn't work because of the bathroom doorframe. I really don't want to go wireless but it seems my choices are dwindling. Does anyone else have a suggestion?

Do you have an open basement, if any at all? If your basement is finished, then removing drywall or ceiling tiles would be a pain, but if your basement is just rafters, you could run the wire along the basement ceiling and up to wherever your room is.

:) I understood that it was on the same floor. I was asking if you were on the first floor of your house and if so, is your basement finished or does it have open rafters (thats assuming you have a basement)? Then what you would do is drill a hole behind the carpet in your room, usually the closer to a wall the better, then run your cable wire from your room down along the rafters in the basement, then drill another hole to the office(behind the carpet also) and fish the wire cable up through. If you don't have an open basement, your best bet would be wireless.

Yes it is the downstairs and finished but I am very sure my dad would be against any sort of drilling and work for me to get internet.

It seems that wireless connection is the only way to go then, I don't know of any other method for running the wires :( Good luck, hope you get it figured out, take care!

Quick Fix - Just paint the cord the color of the carpet, duh.
The other option, if you have any like casing on the bottom of the wall by the carpet, usually you can slip the cords under there so they're virtually invisible

Considering the floor is not the same color it wouldnt work. Plus if you read up to my original post I would have put it under the carpet but the bathroom doorframe messes that up.
